Hi I’m Gema! and this week we are going to talk about the eLearning tools and our aim is to verify if they are reliable or not . In my case I choose Zoom because it is a tool that due to this special situation has become an indispensable one . Zoom is a cloud-based video communications platform for video and audio conferencing, chat and webinars on mobile, desktop and room systems also Zoom does not allow children under the age of 16 to register in their own accounts. Primary and secondary schools or districts must register students to use Zoom for Education through a K-12/ Primary and Secondary account.
Firstly , according to the functionality Zoom has a good scale because you can accommodate any size class with the flexibility to create smaller sub-groups or communities of practice also its ease of use is quite good both teachers and learners can use it without any problem because it is so intuitive . If we talk about the hypermediality , zoom works well in this aspect because you have the chat, the camera and the audio and you can use all of them at the same time .
Secondly, the accessibility of Zoom is quite good because if we talk about required equipment this tool doesn’t require specific devices , the majority of students and teachers can use it , also according to the user-focused participation , Zoom is designed to address the needs of diverse users , their various literacies and capabilities . Although if we consider some aspects such as the cost of use the accessibility maybe is worse because there are some benefits that are available if you pay , such as the members in a session .
Thirdly , the technical aspect of Zoom is good related to the browser and the additional downloads because users can use the tool with any standard , up-to date browser and they don’t have to download any additional software or browser extension.
Fourthly , referring to the mobile design we have to highlight that taking away the offline access is quite bad because the tool cannot be used in any capacity offline , the rest is very good . The access is good because you can download the app or use it via the internet and the functionality is also good because there aren’t differences in the app between the mobile phone version and the computer one .
Fifthly, according to the privacy , data, protection and rights we have to take into account two aspects . The sign up is good because you don’t have to create an external account or an additional log in , so your personal information is not shared and the data privacy and ownership is good , users maintain ownership and copyright of their intellectual data and the user can keep data private and decide if they want to share or not .
Sixthly, the social presence is so good because Zoom has the capacity to make an asynchronous and synchronous learning giving the opportunity of making a collaborative use, also it is widely known and popular , so there are many people that can be familiarized with it, but the teachers cannot control students anonymity .
Seventhly, if we talk about the teaching presence we have to highlight that the app has a good facilitation that provides the facility of presenting the app to the students , also the customization is quite good because it doesn’t matter if the classroom context changes .
Eigthly , according to cognitive presence for my point of view the only aspect that can be applied is the metacognitive engagement because the teacher can explain to you the good and bad aspects of your task in a online session .
In conclusion , from my point of view Zoom is an online tool that has helped and is helping us to confront this problematic situation because it gives us the opportunity of making lessons in a good way and it has a lot of tools for doing it more interactive and easy . Taking others points of view , you have to consider that if you work with the university you have your data protected but maybe if you use it by your own we don’t know if they use information for improving the app , but apart from that Zoom is a application that is it well designed and it is secure and has been very popular the past few months.
